Fiction is usually a made up piece of writing. They can be based on real life situations or come from the writer’s imagination or even a mixture of the two. Types of fiction includes prose, poetry, and drama.
Prose is a straight piece of writing whereas poetry rhymes or has a rhythm to it. Drama includes plays, musicals, and scripts. There are many types of prose fiction, this can include:
Relies on the writer’s imagination. It often describes scientific changes within a future world that the writer has made up.
Writing based on historical events and research but use their imagination to make the story come alive.
Romance writers focus on relationships and use their imagination to create situations for the characters.
A type of novel that tells the early moral, psychological, and intellectual development of a main character. Harry Potter is a modern-day example.
Types of prose fiction can be presented in forms such as a novel, novella or short story’ defined by length. They are a fairly new type of fiction compared to poetry and drama. Examples of prose fiction include:
Philip K Dick, the science-fiction writer, wrote short stories that were turned into the films Minority Report, Total Recall and The Adjustment Bureau.
You may have heard of Charles Dickens’s novella, A Christmas Carol. Another famous novella is John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and Life of Pi by Yann Martel
