Teens and Sleep

It’s a long established paradigm that most teenagers tend to like a lie-in at weekends, moreover if they are anything like I was, then nothing less than force 10 hurricane is required to drag them out of bed. This, however, may not be a bad thing, more and more research is being published concerning the benefits of sleep for the brain and for improving educational performance.  A small trial at Monkseaton High School in North Tyneside, where school start times were shifted from 08:50 to 10:00, led to an increase in the percentage of pupils getting five good GCSEs from about 34% to about 50%. Among disadvantaged pupils, the increase had been from about 19% to about 43%

For some great information on how lack of sleep can affect your body and brain, as well as some great tips on getting a good night’s sleep, we recommend you check out the National Sleep Foundation website at www.sleepfoundation.org and hopefully you can get either your or your teen’s brain into top gear for exam time.
