PISA Rankings Wales

2nd October 2014

Education Minister Huw Lewis is expected to announce a shifting of the Welsh Government’s international “Pisa” target as part of a long-term vision for Wales’ schools system.

Mr Lewis will unveil “Qualified for Life”, a new education improvement plan for three to 19-year-olds in Wales.

What are the Pisa tests?

  • International tests in maths, reading and science
  • Tests are taken by 500,000 15 year old pupils in 65 countries
  • The tests take place every three years by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Wales online report

''Wales’ average score in maths dipped for the second time running to a lowly 468 points – 30 points below Scotland and 27 behind England.

Science, Wales’ strongest Pisa suit, was also cause for concern and the nation’s average score fell again to 491 – the lowest recorded level.''
