The key facts for using the kinetics formula: speed = distance ÷ time

The kinetics formula is very important and will keep returning in questions in the new GCSE maths syllabus, so it is crucial that you learn this formula and have a good understanding of how it can be used.

The following equation explains the relationship between speed, distance and time.

Speed = distance ÷ time

  • Speed is the rate of movement of an object.

  • If an object starts to move at a faster rate then it will cover more distance in a shorter amount of time

 

To work out the speed of an object you must first have the following information:

  • The distance travelled

  • How much time was taken to travel that distance

 

Speed, distance and time are each measured differently

  • Speed is measured in metres per second, m/s

  • Distance is measured in metre, m

  • Time is measured in seconds, s

 

Below is an example to show how the kinetics formula is used in a question:

A person runs 100 meters in 10 seconds

  • Speed = distance/time

  • Speed = 200m/20s

  • Speed = 10m/s
