GCSE English Literature; An Inspector Calls

25th April 2014

As part of our revision in the countdown to GCSE's this summer, we're posting free character profiles from this years English Literature texts.

Here we have the key characters from An Inspector Calls ;

Arthur Birling:  Typical business man of the capitalist class, he's arrogant and without any kind of morals. He does not accept guilt for Eva’s death.

Sybil Birling:  Arthur’s wife. Like him, she refuses any responsibility for Eva’s death. She's conservative and worried about what people think about the family’s reputation.

Eric:  Son of Arthur and Sybil Birling. Eric is a thoughtful person, and as the story unfolds he accepts responsibility for Eva’s death and alcohol addiction.

Sheila:  Daughter of Arthur and Sybil Birling. Sheila is sensitive and honest, as the story unfolds she becomes fully conscious of her guilt.

Gerarld Croft:  He is engaged to Sheila, and is similar to her father Arthur Birling.

Eva Smith: Working class. She is treated unfairly due to her social class and gender.

Inspector:  His objective is to make the characters question their lives and behaviour.
