How to analyse a non-fiction prose extract - English Language
You may be asked to analyse a piece of text which a piece of non-fiction. The notes below give a handy set of reminders for you when you are writing an essay or exam.
THE TEXT
When was the text written?
When was it set?
What is the social and political context?
Who is the author and what is their background?
Is the work part of a movement or style?
Does the work have a mission or purpose?
THE LANGUAGE
What kind of language does the author use?
Is the writing formal or informal?
Do they use lots of devices?
CHARACTERS
Who are the characters and their roles?
Are they opposites of each other or similar?
What is the theme, love, death, politics etc.?
FORM AND STRUCTURE
Is the writing in the 1st or 3rd person?
Is it a stream of consciousness?
Are there flash backs or forwards?
How do they use punctuation?
Are the sentences short or long and why would that be?
MOOD AND TONE
How does the piece make you feel?
Has it made you think?
Can you relate to the situation?
