How to analyse a non-fiction prose extract  - English Language

 

You may be asked to analyse a piece of text which a piece of non-fiction. The notes below give a handy set of reminders for you when you are writing an essay or exam.

 

     THE TEXT

  • When was the text written?

  • When was it set?

  • What is the social and political context?

  • Who is the author and what is their background?

  • Is the work part of a movement or style?

  • Does the work have a mission or purpose?

 

      THE LANGUAGE

  • What kind of language does the author use?

  • Is the writing formal or informal?

  • Do they use lots of devices?

 

      CHARACTERS

  • Who are the characters and their roles?

  • Are they opposites of each other or similar?

  • What is the theme, love, death, politics etc.?

 

      FORM AND STRUCTURE

  • Is the writing in the 1st or 3rd person?

  • Is it a stream of consciousness?

  • Are there flash backs or forwards?

  • How do they use punctuation?

  • Are the sentences short or long and why would that be?

 

      MOOD AND TONE

  • How does the piece make you feel?

  • Has it made you think?

  • Can you relate to the situation?

Use the PEE method, POINT, EXPLAIN and EVIDENCE
