GCSE Chemistry Revision - Atoms

10th June 2014

We have some revision points on Atoms today, to accompany our chemistry + atoms revision song  coinciding with today's GCSE Chemistry exam.

  • All substances are made of particles called atoms. An element is a substance made of only one type of atom.
  • Atoms consist of electrons surrounding a nucleus that contains protons and neutrons. Neutrons are neutral, protons and electrons are electrically charged: protons have a relative charge of +1 and electrons have a relative charge of -1.
  • The chemical symbol for an element shows its mass number, and its atomic number at the bottom.

  • The atoms of each element are represented by a chemical symbol. You can find these in the periodic table, which has metals on the left, and non-metals on the right - we have another song to help you remember the periodic table, and we'll look at this in another post.

We have a clip of our atom song available on Youtube ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUWQhOna_Wg

You can listen to demo's of all our revision songs here; http://learnthrumusic.co.uk/subjects/#subject-5
